The Legion of Space was pretty much as I expected - s space opera. It was interesting to realize that this was a vision of the future from before television was invented, where an "optiphone" was an extrapolated gadget for personal audio/video playback/5.

This book introduces one of my favorite characters in all Sci-fi: Gile Habibula - who is loosely based on Falstaff (according the JW himself). Sit back with this book, and enjoy as the Legion legens (John Ulnar, Hal Samdu, and Giles) - fight the evil members of the reactionairy Purple Hall/5(14).

"The Legion of Space" is not for everyone, however, and does admittedly come with its share of problems. The book is inelegantly written, to put it mildly, and those readers who prefer their sci-fi to seem more like prose poetry should stick with the likes of Ursula K.

LeGuin or J.G. Ballard/5. "The Legion of Space" is a perfect snapshot of 's space opera, or "super science stories" as they were known at the time. Reading it for the first time recently, I can only imagine what mind-blowing effect this breathless tale would have had on an imaginative twelve year old in Depression-era America.4/5(4).

This book delves heavily into the "Alpha Legion", the mysterious final legion of Space Marines in the Warhammer 40k universe. Told mostly from the perspective of frontline human infantry and an immortal spy, it's one of the more refreshingly comic tales I've seen come out of this otherwise grimdark universe/5.

The Legion of Space is classic sci-fi from the 30's and 40's: the enemies are alien and implacable, the companions steadfast and brave, the heroine beautiful and imperiled, and the young hero fearless and daring.

It's continuous, driving style of suspense has been successfully copied from the movie serials of the era.
